The Cisco Local Academy at Delaware JVS was instrumental in completing a networking project at the Dempsey Technology
Center in Delaware, Ohio. The building was renovated from a business to an educational computer center with 50 learning
stations and 2 computer labs. This renovation included 152 RJ-45 connections and 17,000 feet of CAT 5 cable.
The students took their turn feeding and pulling cable through conduit with pull string or fish tape. Labeling each cable became
an important assignment since each room had from 8 to 60 drops.
After the cable, the "terminators" were appointed to begin terminating the jacks in each classroom or office. All overhead CAT
5 cables in the largest room could not lay on the suspended ceiling so several dozen bridal rings and u-bolts were placed
every 4 - 5 feet to hold the cable. Bundling all the wire from the conduit to the wiring rack was a time consuming project.
Finally, it was time to punch down the connection at the wiring rack and test all lines with the Fluke meter.
Students who assisted in the wiring project are: Daniel Alicie, Jeremy Dinovo, Brandon Edler, Lucas Atkinson, Seth Delaney,
Adam Dickison, Trevor Mathis, Glenn Nice, Josh Ruggles, Elvis Ellis, Gerald Harrigan, Ryan Schwartz and Bryan Windzigl.
This project was organized by TRECA and the Ohio CATC. The Regional Trainers Elaine Horn and Andy Daniels supervised.
This was a great educational project for Randy Moore and his electronics and Computer Networking program. "Instead of
simulating a computer project, our students actually built and tested a computer network for the Delaware City Schools," says
Mr. Moore. He added,"This gave our students a chance to apply their knowledge in a real-world application to help a
neighboring school district." After the Dempsey project, the students will continue to network 60 new computers to an existing
network at the Delaware JVS South Campus.
