E-commerce is growing at an incredible rate. The need for qualified computer professionals is out pacing the system's ability to produce them. In the next five years a large portion of highly skilled computer professionals will retire. A person with a computer certification has an increased chance of landing a high paying job. The Internet is comprised of many small networks connected together to form a very large network. The equipment needed to tie these networks together is comprised of many black boxes. Without these internetworking devices the Internet would not exist. Cisco commands 90% of the worldwide market for these internetworking devices. To address these issues Cisco initiated a program to teach high school students the skills needed to install and maintain internetworking devices, thus the birth of the Cisco Networking Academy.
